South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) has reached a new milestone in the construction of its VC Summer nuclear power project in South Carolina (United States), with the installation of the first steam generator at the second unit of the new-build project.
The nuclear project consists in the construction of two AP1000 reactors rated 1,117 MW each on the site of the existing VC Summer-1 (971 MW) that was commissioned in 1984. Construction started on both units in 2013 but in March 2015, SCE&G delayed by six months the completion of construction works. The completion of units 2 and 3 is now expected in 2019 and 2020, about 6 months later than previously expected.
Two other AP1000 units are also under construction at Vogtle, in Georgia, and two each at the Sanmen and Haiyang projects in China. The four Chinese units are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2017.
