Scatec starts its 1.1 GW solar + 100 MW/200 MWh BESS project in Egypt

Scatec has started operations on the first phase of its Obelisk solar project, with 561 MW of solar capacity and a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS in Egypt (Scatec press release, 23/02/2026). The second phase of the project, which is currently under construction and scheduled to come online during the summer of 2026, consists of an additional 564 MW of solar capacity to complete the overall capacity of 1.1 GW solar + 100 MW/200 MWh BESS of the project.

Once both phases are operational, the Obelisk project is expected to become “Africa's largest hybrid solar and battery installation”, helping to avoid more than 1.2 MtCO2/year and deliver over 3 TWh/year of clean energy that will be supplied to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) under a 25-year PPA

Scatec owns 60% share on the project and is in advanced discussions with additional equity partners. The company holds a 6.2 GW portfolio of assets in operation and under construction.
