SBM Offshore plans two floating wind projects in the North Channel (UK)

SBM Offshore is investigating two sites in the North Channel halfway between Northern Ireland and Scotland (United Kingdom) for floating offshore wind projects. The two sites would generate a combined 400 MW. North Channel Wind 1, which could accommodate 15-20 turbines, is expected to have a capacity of around 300 MW and North Channel Wind 2 would have 5 to 7 turbines totalling around 100 MW. The two projects could be sited in areas between 12 km and 27 km from the coasts of counties Antrim and Down. The power from these would be cabled to shore connecting to the grid at a location currently under consideration. SBM Offshore aims to secure all consents and permits in 2026, targeting a Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2027 and a start of construction in 2027-2028. The projects could then be commissioned in 2030.
