Saudi Arabia updates its net metering scheme for rooftop PV systems

The Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority (ECRA) of Saudi Arabia has released new rules for distributed solar PV systems ranging from 1 kW to 2 MW for all kinds of energy consumers, in order to encourage electricity consumers to install PV systems under the national net metering scheme. Saudi power distribution companies will have to provide the information needed for feasibility studies to consumers willing to install PV systems and to apply for grid connections.

In August 2017, the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority of Saudi Arabia had introduced a net metering scheme for small-scale (less than 2 MW) solar power producers consuming their electricity generation and exporting unused power to the national grid. Under the net metering framework, which came into force on 1 July 2018, consumers have their excess electricity offset against their future consumption and they receive cash payments at a regulated tariff after a year.

In January 2019, Saudi Arabia announced the objective of reaching 60 GW of renewables by 2030, of which 40 GW from solar sources.
