Saudi Arabia signs PPAs with 7 solar power projects totalling 3 GW

Saudi Arabia has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with 7 new solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants totalling 2,970 MW in the second round of the country’s procurement scheme for renewable energies. The selected projects comprise the 1,500 MW Sudair project developed by PIF and ACWA Power, the 600 MW Shuaibah project (ACWA Power, Gulf Investment, Al Babtain Contracting), the 300 MW Jeddah project (Masdar, EDF, Nesma), the 300 MW Rabigh project (Marubeni, Aljumaih), the 200 MW Qurayyat project (ACWA Power, Gulf Investment, Al Babtain Constracting), the 50 MW Al Madinah (Al Blagha, Alfanar, Desert Technologies) and the 20 MW Rafha (Al Blagha, Alfanar, Desert Technologies). The Shuaibah project’s cost of electricity is US$1.04c/kWh. In addition, the country has commissioned the 300 MW Sakaka IPP solar PV power plant and the 400 MW Dumat At Jandal wind power lant should enter commercial operations in 2021.
