São Paulo State adopts energy strategy by 2020 (Brazil)

The São Paulo government has presented the Paulista Energy Plan (EPP), a set of guidelines and proposals by 2020, to develop renewable energies and encourage rational and efficient use of energy. Funding of these proposals are based on the State Policy on Climate Change (SPCC), which established a 20% reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by the end of the decade.

This cut in CO2 emissions would be possible in developing renewables and in adding 4.7 GW of wind capacity. As well, biomass-fired power capacity could increase from the current 4.8 GW to 13 GW, while biogas-fired capacity could increase from 1.03 GW to over 1.55 GW. The share of renewables in the State's energy mix could then increase from the current 56% to 69%.

The plan estimates that the existing energy efficiency measures could save up to 2 GWh. Additional measures could raise the savings to 13.5 GWh by 2020.
