The Australian National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has accepted the Barossa Development Drilling and Completions Environment Plan (EP) being developed by the Australian energy group Santos.
The AUD4.3bn (US$3bn) Barossa gas project is an offshore gas and condensate project that seeks to supply gas to the 3.7 Mt/year Darwin LNG plant (DLNG) facility in the Northern Territory, with natural gas extracted from the Barossa field situated approximately 285 kilometres offshore north-northwest from Darwin (northern Australia) and transported via gas pipeline.
The project remains locked in a legal dispute after the Federal Court of Australia overturned a drilling approval awarded by the NOPSEMA in September 2022. With this approval, Santos is preparing to proceed with applications for all remaining permits to continue with the project. The group still expects to start producing gas in the first half of 2025 despite the setbacks.
