Santos’ Moomba CCS project has permanently stored 2 MtCO2e in just over 18 months of operation in the Cooper Basin in South Australia (Santos press release, 20/05/2026).
According to the press release, the project, the largest onshore CCS project in Australia, stored about 1 MtCO2e in the 2024/2025 period, representing about 1/3 of the overall emissions reduction under Australia's Safeguard Mechanism relative to 2023/2024 period. The project is reported by the Clean Energy Regulator's 2024-25 Safeguard Mechanism data insights as a contributor to reduced emissions intensity in the oil and gas sector. "To date, the Moomba CCS project has received more than 1.19 million Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for CO2e injected from project start-up to 30 September 2025", according to Santos.
The project has directly contributed to Santos achieving its 2030 Scope 1 and 2 equity emissions reduction target five years ahead of plan. The company has secured acreage in the Cooper/Eromanga Basins with a potential for injection of up to 20 MtCO2/year for up to 50 years.
