The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has granted planning permission for the development of RWE’s 900 MW Nordseecluster B (comprising NC 3 and NC 4), the second phase of its 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind project in the German North Sea (RWE press release, 27/03/2026).
- The first phase of the project, the 660 MW Nordseecluster A, is already under construction at 46 km north of the German island of Borkum and 50 km north of the German island of Juist. It is scheduled for grid connection and commissioning by early 2027.
- The 900 MW Nordseecluster B, the second phase of the project, has already started with the production of some of its components, the installation of its foundations is scheduled by 2027. It will be composed of 60 wind turbines that should get installed by 2028, targeting commercial operations in early 2029. RWE has already signed a PPA with Amazon for 110 MW from its Nordseecluster B.
Once completed, both phases are expected to jointly generate about 6.5 TWh/year of clean electricity. The Nordseecluster is a project jointly owned by RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%), with RWE being responsible for the construction and operation of the projects throughout their entire life cycle.
