RWE has started supplying electricity from its Nordseecluster A offshore wind plant to the German grid, marking a key milestone for the wider 1.6 GW Nordseecluster project (RWE press release, 22/07/2026).
The first phase of the Nordseecluster A project has a planned capacity of 660 MW and is expected to be fully connected to the grid in early 2027. Installation of the 44 Vestas wind turbines is underway, with power transmitted via two offshore substations and separate grid connection points. The project is located around 50 km north of Juist off Germany’s North Sea coast.
The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add a further 900 MW of capacity. Foundation installation is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the installation of 60 Vestas turbines planned for 2028 and commercial operations expected in early 2029.
The project is jointly owned by RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%), with RWE responsible for construction and operation. Once fully operational, Nordseecluster is expected to generate around 6.5 TWh/year of electricity.
According to our data, Germany had an installed wind capacity of 73 GW as of 2025, of which 9 GW was offshore wind (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
