RWE will start to decommission the Biblis nuclear plant (Germany)

RWE Power plans to start the decommissioning process of its Biblis nuclear power plant (NPP) in Hesse (Germany) as soon as the Hesse Ministry of Environment (Land of Hesse) will issue permits to decommission and dismantle the units A and B. The dismantling program has been approved and the operations are expected to last 15 years; the progress will be monitored by the Hessian Ministry of the Environment (hessische Umweltministerium).

The units A and B of the Biblis NPP are two pressurized water reactors with an installed capacity of 1,167 MW and 1,240 MW. The two reactors went into operation in 1974 and 1976 and they had license to operate until 2019 and 2021. They had to stop operation in the wake of the Fukushima accident in 2011 with the entry into force of the Atomic Energy Act (Atomgesetz), when the German government ordered the immediate shut-down of eight nuclear units that started operations in or before 1980. The two Biblis reactors were among the chosen units.

In August 2012, RWE Power submitted applications to the Hessian Ministry of the Environment for the decommissioning and the dismantling of the units A and B of the Biblis power plant.
