RWE has taken a final investment decision (FID) to develop a 400 MW/1.1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Moerdijk power power in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands (RWE press release, 21/09/2026). The planned facility will consist of 208 lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery containers and is designed to provide grid-balancing services equivalent to the evening peak electricity demand of approximately 500,000 households for up to three hours, said the company.
The battery installation will be connected to the Dutch national grid through the existing substation at RWE’s Moerdijk power plant. The site is already home to the first synthetic inertia battery linked to the continental European grid, featuring a capacity of 7.5 MW/11 MWh, according to the company. Construction is expected to commence in the near term, with the system scheduled to enter operation in th second quarter of 2028.
The project supports the integration of renewable power generated by the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind project, which is being jointly developed by RWE and TotalEnergies.
In the Netherlands, RWE currently operates two battery storage facilities, including an additional 35 MW/41 MWh system located at Eemshaven. Worldwide, RWE operates battery storage assets with a combined capacity of around 1.7 GW, while a further 3 GW is currently under construction.
