The German energy group RWE has launched site surveys to develop the 1.6 GW Canopy floating offshore wind project off the coast of Humboldt County, northern California (United States). The site investigation surveys for the floating project will be conducted during the course of 2024 and 2025. Canopy is expected to be in operation by the mid-2030s, pending the necessary authorisations, and will be able to power around 640,000 US households. RWE had secured the lease area for this project, which will be the company’s first commercial floating wind park, in 2022.
At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US only had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity. Over 10 GW of onshore and offshore wind power capacity is under construction and over 60 GW is under development (of which over 36 GW offshore).
