RWE starts construction on the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind project in the UK

The German power company RWE has started construction of the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind park, located off the North Sea Coast of the United Kingdom, on Dogger Bank. The offshore work has begun with the installation of the first section of high voltage direct current (HVDC) export cable, laid by the Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian.

The Sofia offshore wind project, which will require an investment of over £3bn (€3.5bn), is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. It will comprise 100 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW offshore wind turbines. Once completed, it will be RWE’s single largest offshore wind park to date and will be able to power about 1.2 million British households. RWE is currently operating 10 offshore wind parks in the UK, totalling an installed capacity of nearly 4 GW.

The UK plans to reach 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end-2022).
