RWE has started onshore construction works for its 1.4 GW Sofia (Dogger Bank Teesside B) offshore wind project located 195 km off the northeast coast on Dogger Bank in the British North Sea. The company has initiated works at the site of the new HVDC converter station, that will be built by GE Grid Solutions in Teesside.
The project, which is 100% owned by RWE, represents a total investment of £3bn (€3.5bn). RWE was awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) for Sofia in 2019, achieving a strike price of £39.65/MWh (in 2012 prices). Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy was selected to supply 100 turbines rated 14 MW each for the project in June 2020. The company made a final investment decision on the project in March 2021. Offshore construction works are scheduled to start in 2023 and the wind project could be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2026. The electricity generated by Sofia will be fed into the national grid at an existing substation located in Lackenby, Teesside.
