RWE signs preliminary deal with Sempra to import 2.25 Mt/year of US LNG

Sempra Infrastructure, an affiliate of the US energy group Sempra, has entered into a heads of agreement (HoA) with RWE Supply & Trading, a subsidiary of RWE, for the purchase of approximately 2.25 Mt/year of LNG on a long-term, free-on-board basis from the Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project in the United States. The HOA contemplates the negotiation and finalisation of a definitive 15-year LNG sale and purchase agreement for 2.25 Mt/year to be delivered from the Port Arthur LNG project, currently under development in Jefferson County, Texas. The Phase 1 of the Port Arthur LNG project is fully permitted and is expected to include two liquefaction trains and LNG storage tanks, as well as associated facilities capable of producing, up to approximately 13.5 Mt/year of LNG.

Earlier in May 2022, RWE chartered two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), owned by Höegh LNG, which will jointly be able to import and regasify between 10 and 14 bcm/year of gas. RWE expects the two FSRUs to start operating as early as next winter. The group will now determine the most suitable site to moor the FSRUs in Germany, with a first expected in Wilhelmshaven, and options under consideration in Brunsbüttel, Rostock or Stade.
