RWE selects Siemens Gamesa turbines for the 1 GW Thor wind project (Denmark)

The German utility RWE has selected Siemens Gamesa to supply wind turbines for the 1 GW Thor offshore wind project located 22 km off Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland (Denmark). Siemens Gamesa will deliver 72 offshore wind turbines (SG 14-236 DD), 36 of which will be equipped with CO2-reduced steel towers. These turbines are meant to ensure a CO2 reduction of at least 63% in the tower steel plates compared to conventional steel. In addition, RWE has notably selected for the project Fred.Olsen Windcarrier for turbine installation, EEW SPC and Dajin Offshore for monopile foundations, and a joint venture between Hellenic Cables and Jan De Nul Group to provide the entire cable package.

The Thor offshore power plant is expected to become fully operational by 2027 and will be able to provide electricity for more than one million Danish households.

Since 2010, RWE has already completed and now operates the 207 MW Rødsand 2 offshore wind power plant off Denmark.
