The German utility RWE has selected Siemens Gamesa as its preferred supplier to provide turbines for its 1 GW Thor offshore wind project in the Danish North Sea, 22 km from Thor, on the west coast of Denmark’s Jutland. The turbine manufacturer will provide 72 SG 14-236 DD turbines, which have a maximum capacity of nearly 15 MW. Installation works will be carried out from the Port of Esbjerg. RWE plans to start installing the turbines in 2026, and the project is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2027. The agreement, which also includes a service contract, is subject to RWE’s final investment decision (FID) for the project.
In January 2022, RWE signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Danish Energy Agency for the Thor offshore wind project and in May 2022, the Danish Energy Agency issued a feasibility study permit for the project. It was awarded to RWE in December 2021.
