The German energy company RWE has secured the final marine licences needed to build its up to 1.1 GW Awel y Môr offshore wind project located off the coast of northern Wales (United Kingdom). The licences have been awarded by Natural Resources Wales on behalf of Welsh Government following the granting of a Development Consent Order for the project in September 2023.
The Awel y Môr offshore wind project, scheduled for completion by 2030, will comprise between 34 and 50 turbines and will be able to supply electricity to about 500,000 Welsh households once completed. The project will be located about 10 km off the Welsh coast in the Irish Sea, alongside the operational 576 MW Gwynt y Môr offshore wind park, also operated by RWE, with its grid connection planned to reach the shoreline between Rhyl and Prestatyn.
The UK plans to reach 50 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end-2022).
