RWE secures licence to develop a 2 GW offshore wind project in Australia

The German utility RWE has been awarded a feasibility licence from the Australian Government for the development of an up to 2 GW offshore wind project in the Bass Strait, off Gippsland in Australia’s Victoria State. The Kent offshore wind project is expected for commissioning in the first half of the 2030s and will be able to power about 1.6 million Australian households when completed.

This licence approval grants RWE an exclusive 7-year seabed right to develop the Kent offshore wind project, and also allows the company to apply for a commercial licence to build and operate the wind farm for up to 40 years. This licence represents RWE’s first entry into Australia’s offshore wind market.

Australia, which did not yet have offshore wind capacity at the end of 2023, has designated four offshore wind development zones, including Gippsland, to support the country’s 2050 net zero emissions target.
