RWE secures approval for its 1 GW Theodore wind project in Australia

RWE has received approval from the Australian federal government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act for its 1.1 GW Theodore wind project in Central Queensland (RWE press release, 15/07/2026). With this approval, the AUD3bn (USD2bn) project has secured all necessary state and federal approvals and should move to obtain secondary consents with the local authorities.

Construction is expected to last about four years and is scheduled to start in 2027, subject to a final investment decision (FID). The project comprises up to 170 turbines and a BESS in Banana Shire, central Queensland. Once completed, the project should generate enough energy to power about 500,000 homes. In May 2026, the project was awarded a Capacity Investment Scheme contract under the Australian Tender 7 for renewables.
