The German energy group RWE has unveiled plans to build an 850 MW hydrogen-ready CCGT power plant at its former Voerde coal-fired power plant in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) (RWE press release, 27/10/2025). The group is currently preparing to participate in future tenders for hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plants that the German government is planning to launch.
RWE already commissioned a consortium of GE Vernova and Tecnicas Reunidas to plan and build the hydrogen-compatible gas-fired power plant in 2024. If the project were awarded a contract in the future tender, RWE would be able to start construction without delay and to commission it as soon as 2030. When operational, the new Voerde CCGT project would be capable of using at least 50% hydrogen, aiming at full hydrogen operation.
