The German energy group RWE and Stanwell Corporation, a Queensland-government owned power utility, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing Queensland's clean energy future in Australia. The partnership's initial phase involves constructing two new wind projects in Central and Southern Queensland by 2029. Stanwell aims to establish a renewables portfolio of 9 to 10 GW of generation and 3 to 3.5 GW of storage by 2035, aligning with Queensland's 80% renewable energy target by 2035. The MoU grants Stanwell potential energy offtakes and equity stakes in the Theodore wind project (1,100 MW) near Biloela and another wind project (up to 720 MW) in Southern Queensland.
In addition, the Queensland state government in Australia has released plans for the future Stanwell Clean Energy Hub at the 1,460 MW Stanwell coal-fired power plant, which is scheduled to start winding down by 2026/27. To begin the transformation of the Stanwell Clean Energy Hub, publicly owned energy company Stanwell Corporation will build the Future Energy and Innovation Training Hub (FEITH) valued at up to AUD100m (US$64m). The hub is located between the potential future Capricorn and Calliope Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) as outlined in Queensland’s Draft REZ Roadmap. Those two zones alone are expected to connect between 1,900 and 3,800MW of installed generation, creating up to 650 construction jobs, supported by the Jobs Security Guarantee for the existing workforce.
