RWE, Equinor, CIP, Ocean Winds and Invenergy win US offshore wind auction

The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has unveiled the provisional results of the offshore wind auction held by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management for five leases offshore California.

The BOEM offered five areas off central and northern California with the combined potential to hold 4.6 GW of offshore wind capacity. For the North California leases, RWE won a lease that could accommodate 769 MW with a US$157.7m bid, while California North Floating (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners) won a lease suitable for 838 MW with a US$173.8m bid. Winners of the Central California leases include Equinor (up to 972 MW, US$130m bid), Central California Offshore Wind (Golden State Wind, a joint venture of Ocean Winds (EDP-Engie) and  Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, up to 976 MW, US$150.3m bid) and Invenergy (up to 976 MW, US$145.3m bid).

The sale, whose bids exceeded the first lease sales held in the Atlantic, is expected to contribute to the US target of developing 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035.
