RWE breaks ground on 400 MW + 700 MWh battery storage in Germany

RWE has started construction of Germany’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Gundremmingen energy site in Bavaria. The 400 MW plant will offer a storage capacity of 700 MWh and leverage the existing grid connection of the nuclear power plant, which is currently being decommissioned (RWE press release, 29/10/2025).

“It will be capable of supplying electricity continuously for almost two hours at a capacity of 400 MW. More than 200 containers housing around 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells will be installed over the next few months”, according to the company’s statement. Total investment is estimated at around €230m (USD266m).

  • Alongside the new battery storage plant, plans are also underway for a solar park and a gas-fired power plant.

Commercial operations are expected to start in early 2028.
