RWE books LNG capacity at Germany's first import terminal project

German energy company RWE has signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with the project company German LNG Terminal to guarantee its access to a substantial annual capacity of the future LNG import terminal in Brunsbüttel (North Germany). This contract follows the open season launched in January 2018.

Dutch natural gas group Gasunie, the Dutch tank storage company Vopak and the German service provider of tank terminals Oiltanking expect the project to be developed on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis and announced the establishment of a joint venture (JV) in January 2018.

Brunsbüttel LNG is slated to have a 5 bcm/year import capacity and would be built in Brunsbüttel near Hamburg. The final investment decision (FID) is expected in 2019 and the terminal could be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2022. The LNG terminal project is supported by the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) and the German transmission system operators (TSOs), which mentioned it in its draft scenario framework for the Gas Network Development Plan (NDP) 2018-2028.
