RWE and the Greek power group Public Power Corporation (PPC) have commissioned nine solar projects grouped into three clusters with a combined capacity of 930 MWp (884 MWac) in Northern Greece (RWE press release, 29/06/2026). The projects were developed by Meton Energy, a joint venture owned by RWE (51%) and PPC (49%), within the former Amynteo open-cast lignite mine. The last installation in the portfolio was recently brought online, and the portfolio is expected to generate enough electricity to cover the annual demand of more than 400,000 Greek households, while supporting the transformation of one of Greece’s former coal regions into a renewable power hub.
The partners are also constructing the Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar projects in Central Macedonia (northern Greece), with a combined capacity of 567 MWp (518 MWac). These projects are scheduled for commissioning in 2027 and should supply electricity equivalent to the demand of more than 240,000 households.
PPC aims to reach 19 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2030. According to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research, Greece intends to develop renewables to cover 81% of its total capacity by 2030 (65% as of 2024).
