The German energy group RWE and the Emirati renewable company Masdar have announced that the Development Consent Order (DCO) for their Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind projects has been accepted into the UK Planning Inspectorate examination phase. The DBS East and DBS West offshore wind projects are located in shallow waters on the Dogger Bank over 100 km off the north-east coast of England (United Kingdom). Consisting in 200 turbines with a combined estimated capacity of 3 GW, the projects are expected to provide enough energy to power up to 3 million homes once operational. RWE will be leading development, construction and operation on behalf of the project partners RWE (51%) and Masdar (49%). If the DCO application is successful, the partnership plans to secure a Contracts for Difference (CfDs) deal followed by financing, construction and commissioning by 2031.
The United Kingdom aims to reach 50 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end 2022).
