RWE and Ferrovial partner to develop 1,750 MW of floating wind in Spain

The German energy group RWE and the Spanish infrastructure company Ferrovial have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the joint development, construction and operation of floating offshore wind parks in Spain.

Ferrovial has already submitted expressions of interest (EOIs) to build four floating offshore wind parks totalling 1,750 MW in capacity off the coasts of Lugo and Pontevedra (north-western Spain), Gerona (north-eastern Spain), and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). All of the projects are proposed to be constructed at sites located between 11 km and 30 km from the coast. RWE and Ferrovial have already partnered on renewable energy in Spain, as they are jointly developing 490 MW of onshore wind capacity and 90 MW of solar capacity in the country.

At the end of 2021, Spain only had 5 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 28 GW for onshore wind). In December 2021, the Spanish government approved the Roadmap for the Development of Offshore Wind and Marine Energy Development, which targets 3 GW of floating offshore wind by 2030.
