RWE, through its subsidiary RWE US Offshore, has reached a settlement with the US Department of Interior (DOI) to resolve claims against the US government and relinquish its offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana (RWE press release, 06/08/2026).
According to the announcement, the company determined that there is no path forward to permit the development of offshore wind projects in the US for the foreseeable future and has settled its legal claims for USD1.22bnof settlement funds. RWE expects to direct its resources toward energy projects that can be advanced with certainty. With this, RWE plans to deploy its capital on the acquisition of a 16% stake in the Louisiana LNG project (USD900m), the signature of a USD300m natural gas turbine reservation agreement to secure its future generating capacity, among other projects across the US.
The company also announced that, through its RWE Americas subsidiary, it plans to invest approximately EUR17bn (USD20bn) over the next six years to grow its generation capacity from about 13 GW to 22 GW by 2031.
RWE had been awarded offshore wind leases under the previous US administration for the development of offshore wind projects in the New York Bight, the coast of California and Louisiana. According to RWE, the company had invested more than USD1bn toward the leases and the development of the projects.
