RWE acquires Poland’s Alpha Solar and its 3 GW of solar project pipeline

The German energy company RWE has acquired the Polish solar PV project developer Alpha Solar, granting it ownership of a roughly 3 GW pipeline of solar projects. The purchase, whose value was not disclosed, strengthens RWE’s operations within the European renewable energy industry and expands its global solar development pipeline to about 10 GW.

According to RWE, the acquired pipeline is spread across Poland. Most projects are of utility-scale in various stages of development, with some ranging from early phase identified opportunities all the way to ready-to-build projects. Alpha Solar, based in Warsaw, was set up in 2019 to provide comprehensive services in the solar development field.

In addition to the newly acquired pipeline, RWE plans to build and commission 70 MW of new PV projects in Poland in 2022 and 2023.

In November 2021, RWE announced plans to invest €50bn through 2030 to expand its renewables capacity to 50 GW in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. It aims at tripling its offshore wind capacity by 2030 from 2.4 GW to 8 GW and expanding its onshore wind and solar capacity from 7 GW to 20 GW.
