RWE acquires the 900 MW East Celtic offshore wind project in Ireland

The German energy group RWE has acquired a 100% stake in the Irish company Western Power Offshore Developments, which is developing the up to 900 MW East Celtic Wind Farm project, located about 10 km off the coast of Wexford and Waterford in south-eastern Ireland. The East Celtic project, which is still in early stages of development, will undergo a public consultation during the course of 2023.

This acquisition will contribute towards RWE’s target of expanding its renewable generation assets internationally up to 50 GW by 2030. RWE is already developing the Dublin Array wind farm project in partnership with Saorgus Energy, off the coast of Dublin and Wicklow, which will be capable of generating 600 to 900 MW of power.

Ireland plans to reach 7 GW of offshore wind by 2030. At the end of 2021, Ireland only had 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 4.3 GW of onshore wind capacity). Currently, the country has more than 27 GW of wind projects under development, including 310 MW under construction.
