The Hungarian government has signed with the Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom a construction contract amendment for the Paks nuclear power plant extension, marking the conclusion of the preparation phase and paving the way for the physical construction phase to commence. Key developments include ongoing walling works, soil excavation for the sixth block, continuous equipment production, and planned soil consolidation in the coming autumn. The two parties aim to pour first concrete by end-2024.
In 2014, the Hungarian government signed an agreement with Rosatom to build two new 1.2 GW nuclear units without any tenders. 80% of the project’s cost will be financed with a €10bn Russian credit line. Preliminary construction work started in 2019 and a construction licence was issued in 2022. The Hungarian power utility MVM owns and operates four 500 MW reactors at Paks commissioned between 1982 and 1987.
