Russia’s Novovoronezh nuclear plant plans for an additional 1.2 GW unit

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant (NPP) has announced plans to build an eighth nuclear reactor with a capacity of 1.2 GW between 2031 and 2037. The new unit is expected to have third generation pressurized water reactors (VVER) that are expected to replenish about 80% of the capacity of the units that are currently planned for decommissioning according to a Rosenergoatom draft master plan.

The Novovoronezh NPP is operated by Rosenergoatom, a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom, and it has been operational for over 40 years on the bank of the Don River (Voronezh, Russia), with four operating units with a total combined capacity of 3.8 GW.

The Rosenergoatom draft master plan for the development of new generating capacities in the Russian Federation until 2042 also includes the construction of 4 new units at the Kursk NPP-2 with a total installed capacity of 4.8 GW and 2 new units at the Smolensk NPP (2.4 GW). The draft will be undergoing public discussion until 20 September 2024, to obtain governmental approval by December of the same year. At the end of 2023, about 11% of Russia’s power facilities where nuclear (30 GW).
