Russia will help Egypt build its first nuclear reactor

Egypt and Russia have agreed to launch detailed discussions on the development of nuclear power in Egypt. Rusatom Overseas and Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority have signed a project development agreement for a nuclear power plant with a desalination facility. The proposed nuclear plant would consist of two reactors and could be later expanded with a further two reactors. Russia and Egypt will now prepare for the signing of intergovernmental agreements, on nuclear power plant construction and on financing.

Egypt plans to build a nuclear unit at the El-Dabaa site on the Mediterranean coast. The site was selected in 1983 but nuclear plans were shelved in 1986 after the Chernobyl disaster. The nuclear programme was relaunched after signing nuclear agreements with Russia in 2004 and 2008. In 2010, Egypt announced plans to build four plants by 2025 (first unit expected in 2019-2020) but the project was put on hold in 2011 after the ousting of former president Mubarak and the plants may be commissioned by 2025-2026 at the earliest.
