Russia submits deal on supplying natural gas to China for ratification

An agreement between the governments of Russia and China concerning cooperation in the area of gas supply from Russia to China via the Far Eastern route has been submitted by the Russian government to the State Duma (Russia’s lower house) for ratification. Once the project reaches its full capacity, Russian pipeline gas supplies to China will increase by 10 bcm/year, reaching a total of 48 bcm/year, which includes deliveries through the Power of Siberia gas trunk line.

In January 2023, an agreement that establishes the terms and conditions of cooperation for gas supplies from Russia to China through the Far Eastern route was signed between the two countries. The deal encompasses the cross-border section of the gas pipeline, which runs across the Ussuri River near the cities of Dalnerechensk in Russia and Hulin in China. In 2021, Russia sold 16.3 bcm of natural gas to China, including 6 bcm of LNG, accounting for 8% of the country’s total exports.
