Russia produced 32 Mt of LNG and 440 Mt of coal in 2025

Russia produced approximately 32 Mt of LNG in 2025, accounting for 7% of the global LNG market, according to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister (TASS, 22/01/2026). “Russia is the world’s fourth-largest LNG producer, with output of around 32 Mt in 2025” he said.

As regards LNG, Russia has signed long-term LNG contracts totalling more than 50 bcm/ year (38 Mt/year), primarily with Japan, China, and India, while the EU Council has recently given final approval to a full ban on Russian LNG imports, set to take effect from early 2027 (EU Council statement, 26/01/2026). Russia plans to expand its LNG sector to seven projects by 2030, with a combined capacity of 100 Mt/year (135 bcm/year), to raise LNG exports to 142 bcm in 2030 and 241 bcm in 2050.(Enerdata Global Energy Research).

Russian coal production reached 440 Mt in 2025, a level comparable to that of 2024, the Deputy Prime Minister added (TASS, 22/01/2026). He noted that the country’s coal industry continues to demonstrate resilience. In 2025, the government introduced a support program for coal enterprises, including deferrals of tax and insurance premium payments, targeted support measures for coal companies, and partial compensation for logistics costs related to coal exports.

According to our data, Russia is the world’s sixth-largest coal producer. Coal exports have declined by 17% since 2021, largely due to the European Union’s ban on Russian coal imports, which came into force in August 2022. Prior to the war in Ukraine, Russia was a major coal supplier to Europe, with around two-thirds of its coal exports destined for the EU in 2021. Since the EU ban, however, Russia has significantly increased coal exports to Asia and Turkey, including a 73% rise to China, a 40% increase to South Korea, a doubling of exports to India, and a threefold increase to Turkey (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
