The Russian Ministry of Energy expects to increase Russia’s installed capacity to 300 GW by 2042, including 169 GW of thermal sources (coal and gas). Under the scheme, the ministry plans to modernise 67 GW from the existing capacity to ensure better reliability. The development plan is expected to be approved by the Russian government before the end of 2024.
In November 2024, the Ministry of Energy of Russia announced plans to add 14.3 GW of new gas-fired power plants. Within the framework of the 2025-2030 Electric Power Industry Development Programme, the construction of new power plants will be required in the south of Russia, the Far East, the southeastern part of Siberia and the Moscow region.
As of end-2023, Russia had an installed capacity stood at 274 GW, with 46% from gas, 19% from hydro, 16% from coal, 11% from nuclear, 6% from oil and 2% from wind and solar.
