The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) has announced that Russia is planning to build eight nuclear reactors in Iran, under a previously signed contract between the two countries. Four of the eight planned nuclear reactors would be constructed in the southern province of Bushehr, according to AEOI.
In 2023, the Iranian government announced the start of initial works to develop five new nuclear power plants in the country, which will total a capacity of 20 GW. In 2024, AEOI announced the start of construction of a 5 GW nuclear power plant in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province (southern Iran).
As of end-2023, nuclear represented 1% of Iran’s installed capacity with 1 GW and about 2% of its power generation. Iran’s first nuclear reactor (Bushehr) was commissioned in 2013 after several delays. The construction of Bushehr-2 (Phases 2 and 3 of 1 GW each) started in 2019 and 2020. Commercial operations are expected in 2026 and 2027 at the earliest.
