The Governments of Russia and Vietnam have agreed to negotiate and sign agreements to construct nuclear power plants in Vietnam. In a joint statement, the two countries said that the development of the plants, which will feature advanced technology, will be strictly compliant with nuclear and radiation safety regulations.
In its revised 8th National Electricity Development Plan, unveiled in April 2025, Vietnam integrated the development of a nuclear power plant, which would have a capacity ranging between 4 GW and 6.4 GW and be commissioned between 2030 and 2035.
In January 2025, the Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom had offered to build two VVER-1200 nuclear reactor units in Vietnam, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on nuclear cooperation between Rosatom and Electricité du Vietnam (EVN).
In addition, Vietnam and Russia have also agreed in their joint statement to boost cooperation in oil and gas industries, including the provision of Russian crude oil and LNG to Vietnam.
