Russia and Uzbekistan launch construction of country’s first nuclear plant

Russia and Uzbekistan have signed a roadmap for nuclear cooperation, as initial concrete has been poured as part of preparations for the construction of the first small modular reactor (SMR) at Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant in Jizzakh (Rosatom press release, 24/03/2026).

The roadmap, "covers all key areas of cooperation on the nuclear power plant construction project, including personnel training, public awareness of modern nuclear technologies, and the creation of a future 'nuclear city' at the plant", according to Rosatom.

A supplementary agreement to the contract for the new nuclear power plant reflects a decision to revise its configuration to include two GW-scale VVER-1000 units and two 55 MW RITM-200N small modular reactors (SMRs). The initial plan envisaged six SMRs; the revised design increases total capacity to more than 2.1 GW, compared with the previous 330 MW.

Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate over 17 TWh of electricity, covering around 14% of Uzbekistan’s total power consumption.
