Russia and Uzbekistan launch construction on 2.1 GW NPP in Jizzakh

Russia and Uzbekistan have officially commenced construction and poured the first concrete on Uzbekistan's first nuclear power plant, located in the central-eastern Jizzakh Region bordering Tajikistan and Kazakhstan (Rosatom press release, 05/06/2026). The hybrid facility plans to integrate two large-scale VVER-1000 reactors with an individual capacity of 1 GW and two SMRs generating 55 MW each. The state-owned Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom is developing the project using Russian technology and SMR designs.

Uzbekistan expects to receive its first nuclear electricity from the small-scale RITM-200N reactor in late 2029. The two larger-scale VVER-1000 reactors are projected to enter service later, in 2033 and 2035 respectively. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce about 17.2 TWh/year, enough to supply approximately 15% of Uzbekistan's total electricity demand
