Russia and Uzbekistan expand nuclear cooperation with new agreements

Russia and Uzbekistan have signed a series of documents aimed at deepening their cooperation in the nuclear energy sector. The joint nuclear power project in Uzbekistan includes plans for the construction of two large-capacity reactors (VVER-1000 Generation III+ units), as well as two smaller units (RITM-200N reactors) with a capacity of 55 MW each. The parties also signed key contractual terms for the supply of nuclear fuel for both small- and large-scale reactors.

According to the Director of the Agency for Nuclear Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan (Uzatom), the first large-capacity reactor is scheduled to be commissioned in 2033, with the second following in 2035. Meanwhile, the first unit of the small nuclear power plant is expected to come online in 2029, with the second to follow approximately six months later.

In May 2024, Uzbekistan signed a contract for the construction of its first nuclear power plant, a small-scale facility in the Jizzakh district, consisting of six 55 MW reactors. In June 2025, Rosatom and Uzatom signed an agreement to explore the potential construction of a large-capacity nuclear power plant in the country.
