RusHydro steps up its presence in the Far East regions (Russia)

The Russian company RusHydro is considering to invest over Rub250bn (around US$4.3bn) for the development of the Far East power system in the next five years. This amount would represent about 50-60% of the company's total investment load. According to RusHydro, the implementation of power projects in the Far East is currently hampered by the lack of a mechanism for guaranteeing investments.

The company's current assets in the region include power plants with a total capacity of more than 13 GW, providing more than 90% of the Far East electricity production. The Russian Far East is a priority for RusHydro, since many of the facilities which are now under construction are concentrated there. In 2012, Rub50bn were allowed to finance the construction of four power facilities in the Far East, namely: the second phase of the Blagoveshchenskaya CHPP (construction completed in 2016), the Yakutsk GRES-2 (start-up is scheduled by the end of 2017), the Sakhalinskaya GRES-2 (start-up in 2018) and a combined heat and power plant in Sovetskaya Gavan (to be commissioned in 2019).

Besides, RusHydro considers the Far East as a promising region for the development of renewable energies. As of 2017, 16 solar power plants have already been built in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), as well as three wind power plants in the Kamchatka Krai and the Sakhalin Region.
