RTE will invest €100bn to modernise the French power transmission network

The French power transmission system operator (TSO) RTE has put out for consultation its 10-year network development plan, planning an investment of around €100bn between 2024 and 2040 to adapt the French electricity transmission network to the energy policy objectives set by the French Government. Including the renewal of infrastructures and the adaptation of the electric system to the new French orientations (relaunch of nuclear power, acceleration of renewables with an emphasis on offshore wind and solar power, reindustrialization via the development of low-carbon industrial zones), the investment prospects increased from €33bn in 2019 to €100bn in 2024. The plan establishes major works like planning a comprehensive connection programme, strengthening the very high voltage (VHV) network to electrify and accommodate new industries in industrial-port areas before 2030, and an infrastructure renewal plan (as 20% of overhead lines are more than 70-year old). The consultation is aimed in particular at manufacturers and territories, and it will be open until 30 April 2024.
