RTE revises upward its 2035 French power demand forecast

RTE, the operator of the French electricity transmission network, has updated its electricity consumption forecasts for 2035. Taking into account the European Union's climate objectives and the aim to reindustrialise France, RTE now predicts electricity consumption between 580 and 640 TWh in 2035. This is higher than the previous scenarios of 540 to 585 TWh and corresponds to an increase in electricity consumption by 10 TWh/year, a pace not seen since the 1980s. To meet this increased demand, France will need to significantly accelerate the deployment of renewables, such as onshore wind and solar. Achieving a low-carbon electricity production of at least 600 TWh by 2035 is seen as ambitious but feasible. However, it will require doubling renewable electricity production to a minimum of 250 TWh, compared to the current 120 TWh.
