RTE awards Fugro seabed study for two 750 MW offshore wind projects (France)

The French power transmission system operator (TSO) RTE has awarded Fugro a contract to perform a geotechnical investigation for future offshore substations at two floating wind park sites in the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean Sea (France). These two sites could have a capacity of 750 MW each. Fugro will provide insights into seabed conditions to enable efficient offshore substation design and foundations.

In August 2022, the French government shortlisted 13 companies or consortiums in the tender to build two 250 MW floating wind projects in the Mediterranean Sea by 2030. One of the projects, which would comprise up to 20 turbines should be located about 20 km off Port-la-Nouvelle in Aude, and the other about 20 km from Fos-sur-Mer. Commissioning of the projects is scheduled for 2030. The two projects could be extended to reach a capacity of 750 MW in a second phase.

France targets 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050 and intends to to award 2 GW of projects each year from 2024.
