rPlus Hydro submits final application for a 1 GW pumped hydro project (US)

The US energy company rPlus Hydro has submitted a Final License Application with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a 1 GW pumped-storage hydropower plant located in White Pine country, Nevada (United States).

The White Pine Pumped Storage project will be able to discharge the 1,000 MW of power for eight hours, making it an 8 GWh system capable of supplying about an eighth of Nevada’s summer peak power demand. The project is estimated to require an investment of US$2.5bn and construction is expected to start in 2025, if the application is approved. Construction could take five to seven years, meaning the project could be commissioned in the early 2030s.

It is the second Final License Application for a pumped hydro plant submitted to FERC by rPlus Hydro in 2023, after the company applied for the 900 MW/9 GWh Seminoe pumped-storage project in Wyoming in January 2023.

At the end of 2021, hydropower represented 8% of the US’ installed capacity with nearly 102 GW and 6.5% of its power generation with 283 TWh. Its pumped storage capacity stood at nearly 22 GW.
