Rosatom will provide fuel for Rooppur nuclear project in Bangladesh

TVEL, the fuel company of Russian state-run nuclear corporation Rosatom, has been officially selected as the sole authorised provider of nuclear fuel for the Rooppur nuclear power project in Bangladesh. All the used fuel will be repatriated to Russia under a March 2017 draft agreement for 22.5 t/year from each reactor.

The Rooppur nuclear plant will comprise two units with a combined capacity of 2,400 MWe. The units will be a modified version of the NPP-2006 VVER-1200 and will be built on the eastern bank of the river Ganges at Rooppur. Rosatom started the construction of Rooppur-1 in November 2017 while the second unit broke ground in July 2018. The commissioning of the two reactors is planned respectively for 2023 and 2024. The entire project is worth US$12.65bn and Russia will provide a US$11.38bn credit facility to cover up 90% of the costs. It is projected to generate 10% of Bangladesh's power generation upon completion and will be crucial in improving the country's power supply security.
