Rosatom moves ahead with the 150 MW MBIR nuclear project (Russia)

Rosatom's subsidiary Atomenergomash Technology (AEM Technology) has begun the construction of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the multipurpose sodium-cooled fast neutron research reactor (MBIR) which is currently being built at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad (Ulyanovsk Region, Russia).

The MBIR is a 150 MW sodium-cooled fast reactor and its design life is expected to last 50 years. Its completion is expected by 2020. The MBIR project is currently open to foreign cooperation and the supervision is realized by the INPRO (International Atomic Energy Agency's International project on innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles).

The tender for the reactor has been launched in December 2013 and AEM Technology has been awarded a contract for the supply of the reactor pressure vessel. The MBIR is meant to replace the existing fast test reactor BOR-60 and fits into Rosatom's strategy.

JSC NIIAR is Russia's largest research institute and currently operates six nuclear research reactors.
